Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati — Italian layman, mountain climber, and servant of the poor — lived his short life (1901–1925) with a joy and intensity that left everyone around him transformed. He called himself a man of the Beatitudes, and he meant it: he gave away his coat, his food, his money, and his time to the poor of Turin, often going without so others could have more.

He died at 24 of polio, likely contracted from those he served. At his funeral, the streets were lined with the poor who had known him — his family had no idea how many lives he had touched. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1990, calling him a man of the eight Beatitudes.
