WHO IS SAINT FRANCIS?
Born around 1181 in Assisi, Italy, Francis renounced a life of privilege after a transformative illness to embrace radical poverty and joyful service to the poor. He founded the Franciscan Order, rebuilt crumbling churches, and preached the Gospel to all of creation — including, famously, the birds. He received the stigmata in 1224 and died in 1226, having transformed the Church through his witness to joy and simplicity. He is the patron of animals and ecology, and his feast day is October 4.
